Activities:
The IBSSS prom, held in late April or early May of each year, has received financial assistance from this organization that allows children from across Iowa to participate in prop activities.
Iowa Braille Challenge, a Braille literacy program designed to promote reading and writing of Braille in grades K - 12. This event is held annually and winners of the state challenge progress on to compete regionally and nationally.
Historic preservation, an on going activity that collects historic information and items concerning the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. Documents are collected and researched to assure the true history of IBSSS is preserved. This is an expensive undertaking that members have generously financed out of pocket as much as possible to allow organizational funds to be used elsewhere.
Annual reunions, conducted in June are held on the campus of the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. At these reunions former staff, alumni and friends gather to maintain friendships and kindle new ones. Annual reunions also are used as a fund raising event by selling items at the snack bar.
Clock: The old grandfather clock situated in the main hall of the main building once rang loudly across campus and the community. This clock has fallen into disrepair and was not working until the alumni gathered funds to have the clock repaired. Although working for the 2005 reunion it is still in need of repairs in 2010. What we have is a Herschede Hall Clock bought by the 1953 alumni association and the music department. We are raising funds to get the clock repaired and operational so everyone in the community can once again enjoy the beautiful sounding chimes. We are also trying to raise funds to purchase a new 100 watt amplifier to replace the old and much outdated and non-working unit that connects the microphone system in the clock to the speakers in the bell tower.
Annual Fund raising event: IBSAA will be holding their second annual chili soup day in early December. this event helps us to fund our activities as well as gets the word out about the association and the school.
